ALithophone(litho=stone,phone=voice)datingfrom1840,
TheSkiddawStonesarecomposedof61tunedandshapedrocks,madefrom
therarehornfelsstone,foundinCumbria,England.Hornfelsissaidto
haveasuperiortoneandlongerringthanthemorecommonlyusedslate.

CreatedbyJosephRichardson,astonemasonandmusician,ittookalmost
thirteenyearstocollectandshapeenoughindividualnotesofhornfels
tomakeaneight-octaverange.ThestonesweretakenfromSkiddaw,one
ofthehighestmountainsinCumbria.Themassivetaskofassembling
thisinstrumentconsumedJosephsoabsolutelythatheandhisfamily
werereducedtopoverty.Oncecomplete,Richardsonandhissonstoured
EuropeasTheRock,BellandSteelBand,andevenperformedat
BuckinghamPalace,bycommandofQueenVictoria.

TheStonescurrentlyresideattheKeswickMuseum,whoverykindly
agreedtoletustakethemoff-site,toastudiofortherecording.
Asthestonesareinsuredfor?50000,thiswasnocasualundertaking.
Everystonewascarefullywrappedandpackedincustommadeflight-cases
fortransportation.Onceatthestudio,twodifferentsetsofmallets
wereusedtolaboriouslycapturelargesetsofvelocityhits,thenan
extraarticulationwasrecorded-thesoundoftheheadofthewooden
malletbeingscrapedacrossthestonesurface-asurprisinglyhaunting
andresonantsound.

Theresultisatrulybewitchinginstrument,onethatsoundstruly
ancient,evenolderthanitis.Totallyuniquerockmusic.
